To Profs: Teach, don't read, and we all end up better
08:12pm 03/10/2006
"I was in a philosophy class today, when the professor did what I consider my biggest pet peeve in the classroom: he started to read from the text. Is there anything a professor can do in a classroom that is more annoying, more disrespectful to students than to read from the text? Especially when he assigned that reading for class?

To the professors that are reading this, I implore you: teach the material."

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don't speak often) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me.

It can be anything you want - good or bad - BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.

When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your LJ and be surprised (or mortified) about what people DON'T ACTUALLY remember about you.

I thought it would be better
11:25am 20/03/2006

mood: aggravated
music: The Young Lutheran's Guide to the Orchestra
i've become so cynical concerning my classmates, colleagues, and dorm mates here at Whittier. I just don't understand how so many people can be so immature at this point in their lives. I suppose part of it comes from the lack of limits and boundaries here in college; I know that some of these people has no freedom in high school, so now they're going to let it all out.

But, I just can't believe how immature they are. Today, in one of my classes, we were watching a foreign film about a conquistador who becomes a captor of the natives of what is now southern Florida. In the film, there is a native who is a dwarf, and he acts somewhat insane, to exemplify the way that the natives reacted to the Europeans. But every time he begins to laugh somewhat insanely, at least half of my class just starts to laugh. All through the film, I hear comments like, "Why doesn't he just kick him over?" or, "Why doesn't he just step on him?" and I realize suddenly that none of these people are going to take from the film what our professor wants to be taken. They'll have no better understanding of identity than they had before the film, because none of them are able to take it seriously.

I suppose part of me thought that when I entered college, I'd be leaving high school behind. But I've come to realize more and more over the past few weeks that Whittier, more than most other schools, is just a bigger, richer, less strict Schurr High School. The buildings match up with Schurr (I'm serious.. ask me about it some time), the societies are simply official groups of the people that hang out in groups at Schurr. Nobody is more intellectual (well.. most people aren't.. there is that select few, not unlike Schurr), nobody is more mature, nobody is more driven. Whittier College is just Schurr High School with half the student population, and a lesser music program.

I hoped that it would be better once I got out of high school. I hoped that classes would me more challenging, more exciting. I hoped that my colleagues would be more driven, more mature. The problem is that I never got out of high school. This isn't something beyond high school, it's just a continuation.

My pirate name is:

Captain Jack Bonney

Even though there's no legal rank on a pirate ship, everyone recognizes you're the one in charge. You can be a little bit unpredictable, but a pirate's life is far from full of certainties, so that fits in pretty well. Arr!

the major dillemma
07:53pm 03/09/2005
a combination of scoring music for the screen and screenwriting? or a career in diagnostic medicine?

those are really my two ideas for what i'll do with my life. let me explain the two before i ask you to help me make a decision...

the screenwriting/screen music major

this is the major i've been thinking about for a long, long time. essentially, this is a combination of screenwriting and scoring music for the screen. pretty straight forward, right? what i want to do is find a way to integrate them better. make movies so that the audience isnt only driven forward through the movie by the action and words on screen.

a lot of people will argue that this already happens, but i want to take it to the next level. make make them so involved with each other that neither can actually stand on their own. take it beyond the level of complimenting each other and make them part of each other.

the diagnostic medicine type major

this is the relatively new major that i've come to rather enjoy mulling over. for those of you who havent seen House, M.D. (tuesdays at 9 on FOX), diagnostic medicine is pretty much the medical field that was tailor-made for me. essentially, you examine someone, find out what their symptoms are, and diagnose it. seems simple, right? it's not.

you have to pretty much know everything about all the fields of medicine. you have to be tons of doctoral fields all wrapped into one. but the thing is, you dont treat, you just tell what's wrong.

seriously, isnt that perfect for me? essentially, i have to know everything and and problem solve. i can totally create a major for that. all i have to do is create a problem solving major that coupled with bio courses. not too bad, right?

the part where you input your thoughts

this is the part you've all been waiting for, right? this is the part where you tell me what you think would be a better career for me. take your time. dont make a rash decision. dont just do something because you like it better. seriously, tell me what you think i would be good at, and what i wouldnt be as well. give me reasons if you have em. and if you dont, that's totally okay.

will this have any bearing on what i choose? who knows, but it'll be nice to know what everyone thinks. and the truth of it is that it probably will have a huge input on what i choose. more than even i realize.

so help me out, and have some fun with it..

and before you even do anything, thanks!

Rick Valenzuela Steps Down as Vanguard Director

August 26, 2005

To SCV Members, Alumni and Friends,

It is with great regret, we announce Rick Valenzuela's resignation as Director of the Santa Clara Vanguard, effective October 31, 2005. The Santa Clara Vanguard greatly appreciates Rick's 20+ years of commitment to the corps, the SCV organization, to Drum Corps International and most importantly to the marching members.

Rick has been involved with the Vanguard since the early 1980s. The following is just a short list of his many accomplishments:

* He was a member of the A-Corps soprano line (1983 -1989).
* He joined the SCV Visual Staff in 1990 where he worked with the corps for many years.
* Rick accepted the A-Corps Director position in 2000.
* Rick was named DCI "Director of the Year" in 2002 and has served on the Executive Board for DCI.
* Rick led the participation of the Vanguard in the 2004 Tournament of Roses Parade.

Rick has graciously agreed to help with the selection of his successor and to continue in a mentor role once that successor has been named. We are grateful for his involvement in this process.

Rick will be genuinely missed and we wish him and his family all the best in their future endeavors.

Sincerely,

The Santa Clara Vanguard Board of Directors

english..

mood: sick
AP Count: Two down, Two to go.

Woke up at normal time today, buy my mom and brother didn't. We ended up leaving the house really late, which lead to me not getting to school till 7.10. The doors to the bandroom were closed, so I sat down for a few minutes with Jon and then made my way to the Library for the Lit exam.

The exam was awesome! I loved it, seriously. No exam was ever better than that. The passages and poems were awesome, simply because i'd seen them all before (including my favorite poem of all time.. Alexander Pope rocks). And to all those skeptics who laughed because I said I had a very strong feeling that Brave New World would be perfect for the open question: I TOLD YOU SO!!!! hehe.. seriously. Talk about a perfect book for the question.

So after the test, I went to Mrs. Wellenstein's room to talk about the exam. She seemed really happy that we all liked the test. Then I went to the bandroom and hung out alone, with interspersed conversations with Mr. Castro. Spent lunch with my Love (which was awesome) and then was forced to leave school. I went to grandparents and watched National Treasure with my grandfather. Haven't watched a movie in forever with him. T'was nice. Then the super long ride home..

And that was my day.. how boring, huh?

Stats..
09:22pm 04/05/2005

mood: tired
music: Unbreak My Heart (Regresa a Mi) - Il Divo
AP Count: One down, Three to go.

Today wasn't bad. It was interesting, I guess. Stats test was exactly as I thought it would be. Let's just say, if I don't get a 5 I'll be very very disappointed.

SO my parents woke me up at 6 this morning, wondering why I wasn't up yet for school. Then they remembered the AP. Left me awake the rest of the day. I got up after a while of lying awake in my bed and took a shower. Got ready and left.

Ten minutes later my alarm to wake up rings as I'm on the 10-605 transition. I hate my parents.

So I got gas and went to Doublz. Funny, you think it would usually go in the opposite order.. anyways..

Got a burger and fries and fries for Jhonny and got to school with enough time to see Jade for a while during sixth period. Left a little before noon to go to C-100 for the test.

Went to the library, got the CSF tubs (thanks Lois! 7h4nk5 ju57in3!), and took the test. Then came back to my house.

That was my day.. boring, huh?

Introversion 1: Religion
12:09am 18/04/2005
The end of the school is upon us, and, sadly, it has prompted me to do the most clichéd high-school-senior-thing-near-the-end-of-senior-year-thing-possible: reevaluate who I am. This will probably be a series or something, if I ever get around to it.

First up: religion.

Yeah, I know this is a common subject, but a stupidly long talk with my mother on the way to school today prompted yet another introspective endeavor.

I believe in God. I will state that outright. I do believe that some type of higher being exists. But, I only say that "he" is "God" in order to give him a name I can easily refer to. I believe that he does not exist as an omnipresent, all-powerful being, able to do anything at any time, but rather an omniscient being who simply sits around able to watch and be a rather powerless deity. You see, the being that I see as God, is simply the only perfect being.

Perfection is a rather tricky word to define. In fact, to many people, it is seen as an abstract, apart from concrete existence. But the way I see it, in order for us to have gotten the idea of perfection, since humans are imperfect, a perfect being must exist. This being, since "he" was flawless, had no gender as defined by humankind, and since if there was more than one it would be considered a flaw, there must only be one of "him."

But here is where i falter and i begin having to weigh two sides possible: either "he" was a perfect being who existed at the beginning of time (as defined by us, which i will get into in a later addition to the series) and created the universe and died as any other mortal being would, or "he" is, in fact, an immortal being that can see all, sitting around, looking at the world.

Either way, I sure as heck don't need the Catholic church.

BTW: support the bills for Californian Secession and the Constitutional Ban on Yawning in All Its Forms (Snoring Excluded). They're what we truly need.
